WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Massage therapy is a therapeutic procedure where the soft tissue is rubbed to help relieve and reduce tension and pain. The muscles are kneaded to increase blood flow and encourage relaxation. Pressure is applied with hands, forearms, and elbows to gently work out muscle tension and pain with differing intensities depending on personal preference and muscle condition.
WHAT TYPES OF MASSAGE ARE THERE?
There are over eighty distinct types of massage that can be used for therapy. Swedish massage, for instance, is a soft massage used primarily to promote blood flow and relax muscle tension. Joints are also a focal point of Swedish massages, moving the joints around to develop a range of motion. Deep tissue massage consists of a much more intense pressure and will treat more prominent and protracted muscle tension. This can help with the more deep-seated pain in the lower layers of the muscle. Trigger point massage is sometimes a little bit more disagreeable and consists of a very firm pressure in muscle knots and can help with overused muscle or injured muscles. These various massage techniques can help with a variety of problems and can be applied together for more complicated cases.
