WHAT IS SCIATICA?

Sciatica is an irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest and largest nerve in the body.  The nerve is made up of five different nerves that allow sensation and activity of the leg.  That being said, sciatica is actually a symptom of other issues, not the actual problem.  There are a number of issues that can cause sciatica and depending on which nerve is impaired, symptoms may be present in parts of the buttock, leg, or foot.  

 

WHAT CONDITIONS CAUSE SCIATICA?

  • Lumbar herniated disc

  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Osteophytes

  • Arthritis of the spine
